Woolly Mammoth
For the majority of prehistoric history, we must rely on the finding of fossils and other comparable indications to comprehend life on Earth at the time. After all, there’s no one around to tell us what things were like back then and it’s not like the animals left us notes.

A guy from Iowa and his two boys were out blackberry picking in the woods area of his property in 2010 when they saw something strange. It was indeed a bone jutting out of the dirt, and it was part of a larger discovery that included foot bones, ribs, and a four-foot femur from a woolly mammoth.
A Graveyard
Finding a single spooky item in your garden is enough to catch you off guard, but there’s something much more disturbing. What about an entire cemetery?

One man in New Orleans, Louisiana, was astonished but not shocked. “It’s all part of New Orleans culture,” he subsequently explained. “I believe they [neighbors] could even enjoy it.” In total, he discovered a graveyard with 13 caskets, making it quite the concealed cemetery discovery.
Gold A’Plenty
There is nothing that many individuals would want more than to have a large sum of money come to them without any labor or effort. Wouldn’t it be nice to walk outside and find some money? It would make everything so much simpler!

That’s exactly what one couple went through. They were strolling their dog through “Gold Country,” which is now simply their backyard when they discovered a bucket protruding slightly out of the ground. Upon closer investigation, it was discovered to contain a gold cache worth around $10 million.
UFO
The Kitchener sisters didn’t expect to uncover anything as they dug for worms in their own backyard. They had no idea they’d come across an object that no one could recognize. In retrospect, the whole thing seems pretty suspicious.

When they first found it, they presumed it was a meteorite. However, that was quickly disproven because of the visible outer layer, not to mention its position in the dirt. Furthermore, Gary Winkler, a gem expert, explained that it isn’t a known gem and he didn’t know if it came from natural origins. For now, this discovery remains a mystery.

Old News

While he was doing so, he discovered an old newspaper buried in the yard, which was not unusual in and of itself. The unusual thing was that the date in the newspaper was 10 years old to the day he found it.
A Criminal Conspiracy
When you step out into your backyard, the last thing you expect to learn is that your property has been tied to a crime, especially one of such magnitude. When your home is a part of a crime scene, you can expect it to soon be crawling with police officers to investigate.

This was tied to a crime committed by two truck drivers who stole $1 million from a package bound for Bank of America. Following their arrest, a resident in Fontana, California discovered a portion of the men’s loot totaling $600,000 in their own yard.
An Enormous Earthworm
There are things we see every day that we don’t consider. Most people, for example, would walk right past an earthworm scurrying around in the ground. Although, perhaps they would stop if they saw exactly how big this critter was.

On the other hand, if the same earthworm was approximately 2 feet long, you would not ignore it. This 20-inch earthworm was discovered in the yard of Li Zhiwei, a Chinese laborer. While everyone was taken aback, biologists were particularly taken aback by how the animal had grown so long.
Medieval Money
Historical artifacts are buried all around the world. There are remnants of the past around, whether it’s a fossil or a photograph from a few decades ago.

Some individuals were digging in Israel when they discovered a historical find that would go down in history. They discovered a total of 2,000 medieval coins, the most ever discovered in a single excavation, and the coins varied in age from the 10th to 11th century.
Buried Treasure
Not everyone who discovers treasure in their garden is the lawful owner of that treasure. In this case, for example, the folks who discovered the plunder were not the land owners.

Instead, the genuine property owner had hired a crew to renovate his French home on his behalf. They came found and took a treasure worth an estimated 900,000 Euros while working. That’s more than a million dollars in US currency!
Hidden Bunker
This Canadian man wasn’t seeking anything historically significant or stunning. All he wanted to do in early 2014 was spend a morning clearing out the space between his garage and fence.

Instead, he discovered something unfamiliar – a pillowcase. When he opened it, there were two objects inside: a fully loaded handgun and a cell phone. While it doesn’t appear to be a very ancient find, it appears that a doomsday survivalist may have passed by.
It’s A Minefield
There’s nothing quite like discovering explosives in your own yard, particularly when you simply wanted to get rid of a few unsightly tree stumps. No one wants to go out and have to walk through a literal minefield.

But that’s exactly what happened to a 39-year-old guy in the Czech Republic. When he was removing the tree trunks in May 2013, he spotted something beneath them. After one contact with the authorities, he discovered that his yard was littered with bombs going back to the Second World War.
The Star of Murfreesboro
The Star of Murfreesboro was found in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, at John Pollock. It partially violates the backyard find rule since, while it was someone’s backyard, it wasn’t Pollock’s. That seems a little bit unfair in retrospect, but it certainly was a very impressive discovery.

The Arkansas Diamond Mine presently stands in its place, and the diamond in question was discovered on March 1, 1964. The biggest diamond discovered by a visitor weighs 34.25 carats. It was valued at $15,000 at the time, but by 2006, it had increased to a contemporary $95,452.47.
Fallout Shelter
When the Zwick family discovered a curious metal door in their garden, they didn’t rush to open it. In fact, they waited ten years before peering inside. We can’t imagine waiting that long; we’d be far to curious to just leave it be!

Fortunately, they didn’t have to be concerned about anything sinister — just a piece of history! It was a war bunker, most likely during the Cold War era. However, in recent years, the bunker had filled with water.
A Giant Emerald
When you go out to tend to your corn on your farmlands, you generally anticipate seeing corn and perhaps some wild creatures or insects. You certainly wouldn’t expect to discover wealth. Sometimes, the Earth will provide you far more than you ever could have imagined.

But that is exactly what happened to one farmer in North Carolina. He’d just stepped outside to inspect his maize when he observed something glinting in a hole on his land. It turned out to be a 65-carat emerald of gigantic dimensions.
False Teeth
While there are many items in your yard that are valuable, whether in terms of money or historical significance. In this particular case, there’s nothing outside of humor. Sometimes, you find things that are downright bizarre and you have no choice but to laugh.

That doesn’t mean that every discovery fits into one of those categories. Things people discover in their yards may be alarming or, in another view, rather amusing if you aren’t too grossed out. Like this destitute family in Buffalo, New York, who discovered artificial teeth in their yard.
Army Service Ring
Many persons who have been in the military are proud of their service and prize the accolades and mementos they received during their time in the military. It’s not uncommon for people to receive awards recognizing their sacrifices and heroism.

That’s what makes this find so heartbreaking — someone lost something that was presumably very important to them. When one family discovered the army service ring, they were desperate to find out who it belonged to, but they were unable. The ring is still unclaimed, and this individual just has an intriguing find to cling to.
Cannonball!
It’s always unsettling to discover a weapon or something made from a weapon in your yard. Even if you’re aware that it’s ancient, you’re undoubtedly taken aback. We can’t imagine how weird it would be to find an ancient cannonball in our yard.

For this man, that meant discovering a cannonball while digging a hole for his new fish pond. Instead, he discovered an ancient cannonball. It had been sitting in the yard, waiting to be discovered, since being launched during the Battle of New Orleans in 1812.
Meteorites
Discovering a single meteorite in your backyard is unusual enough. It would be even more startling if you found many of these in your yard. In Bosnia, a guy stepped out into his yard and noticed that six meteorites had fallen into it.

This was especially intriguing because meteorites aren’t commonly found in yards. They normally stand out more in large stretches, such as deserts or freezing locations, and there aren’t many of them in a small area.
Cold War Shelter
This family was wandering about their California garden when they discovered something that was more typical once upon a time but seemed a little out of place.

The entrance they discovered in their garden went down into a bunker, similar to those used during the Cold War. The shelter was built in 1961 and, even when the family discovered it decades later, it was fully equipped in case of an emergency.
Wedding Ring
About 14 years ago, a Canadian woman was heartbroken to discover that she had misplaced her wedding band while gardening. She was astonished to find the ring again in 2015 while gardening.

“The carrot had grown right through the ring, allowing it to be picked out after many years lurking in the dirt,” she subsequently said. This has already happened to a Swedish woman in 2011.
Old Coins
You may not always find big artifacts in your backyard that have both economic and historical worth. That has been demonstrated in a number of settings. One woman was gardening in her backyard when she discovered a one-of-a-kind coin.

It proved to be more than simply something that appeared to be fascinating. It was, in fact, a 1902 dollar coin. This is a very unusual find that provided her with a subtle once-in-a-lifetime experience as well as a terrific narrative to tell.
A Whale Of A Tale
In the late 1970s, a little child observed something poking out of the ground outside his house. At the time, the grownups dismissed it as insignificant and disregarded it. Scientists didn’t return to the site for another 30 years.

It turned out to be the skull and jaw bone of a 16 million-year-old baleen whale. It was a fantastic find, but if we were that youngster, we’d be a little disappointed. Or, we’d spend forever saying “I told you so!”
An Escaped Cheetah
Indeed, there are certain creatures you wouldn’t be shocked to find in your yard. A huge cat, such as a cheetah, is likely to make you cringe if you saw one in your yard. In 2008, a nine-year-old kid in Cambridgeshire rushed into his garden to play when he noticed a cheetah.

Fortunately, he fled to rescue his mother and was uninjured by the animal. Her name was Akea, and she had escaped from the adjacent zoo. The zoo sent over some trainers to recapture the animal and no one was harmed.
Ancient Cash Register
If you don’t know the specifics of a decade, some of the items you uncover from previous periods may appear illogical or unclear. A guy in the United States, for instance, was digging in his yard one day when he discovered a cash register and a hoard of car batteries nearby.

These goods also went well together. The cash register was from the 1940s, and it wasn’t unusual for automobile batteries to be used to power it during the war.
A Roman Villa
Back in 2015, a rug designer in the United Kingdom was going about his normal business when he discovered a magnificent mosaic hidden beneath his yard. He knew right once that it had to have been made a long time ago and promptly called local historians.

He was eventually told that the mosaics traced back to medieval times and are thought to be the ruins of one of the country’s largest Roman villas. Other objects discovered included money, earthenware, oyster shells, broaches, and even a child’s tombstone.
A Bronze Eagle Statue
It’s not every day that someone discovers a bronze statue in their garden, much alone of a magnificent eagle. But that is precisely what occurred in 2015. A bronze eagle statue was discovered buried beneath the earth of a person’s property in Wichita, Kansas.

They then discovered that the statue had been taken. Furthermore, it was estimated to be worth $8000. It only goes to show how much history can be found beneath the surface of certain backyards.
Keep It Secret, Keep It Safe
A New York couple discovered the following garden treasure. They were merely tidying things up in 2018 when they let the plants grow too tall. They were also going to plant some trees. At that point, they discovered a safe that was incredibly tough to unlock.

However, when they did, they discovered wads of cash, gold, and jewels within! The treasure was estimated to be worth $52,000 in all. They also discovered that this property had been stolen from their next-door neighbor approximately a decade before, which they graciously returned.
Dilapidated Stove
Not the most valuable backyard discovery on our list, but it’s still very impressive! A lady in the United Kingdom was working on a gardening job when she noticed something unusual.

Then she came upon this old stove, which she assumed was buried in order to fill up some ground. That’s about all we know about the stove, although as you can see, it was clearly from another age.
An Old Car
Here’s another automobile that was discovered in someone’s garden. In 2017, a family in Oklahoma was attempting to create motocross courses and ramps in their backyard, which required extensive excavating.

It was during this excavating process that they discovered this 2003 Chevy Trailblazer. Surprisingly, they discovered that the rusted bit of trash had been stolen and was even part of an insurance hoax. What a tale!
Glyptodont Shell
On Christmas Day 2015, a passer-by discovered a magnificent meter-long shell on an Argentinian riverbed near his home. The shell is thought to have come from a glyptodont, an armadillo’s prehistoric predecessor.

The guy and his wife believed it may be a dinosaur egg. “When my husband returned from the car, he remarked, ‘Hey, I just found an egg that looks like it came from a dinosaur,'” the wife explained.
Treasures From Long Ago
Imagine discovering a collection of antique antiques hidden beneath your house. In 2007, a guy called Andreas K. was living in Austria when he experienced that exact incident. He discovered rings, silver plates, and buckles dating back centuries.

The item, according to a jeweler, was 650 years old! The kindhearted man decided to give it all to his local museum. What a find he is! Have you noticed what we did there?
Roman Mosaics
When a couple wanted to renovate their old barn into a table tennis room, they discovered something architecturally intriguing beneath the surface. Electricians uncovered antique Mosaic fragments 46 cm underneath the floorboards.

Archaeologists found that the mosaic was utilized as the flooring of a large house during AD 175-220. More ruins from this villa were discovered later, including a Neolithic flint head, Bronze Age pottery, Roman pottery, and Iron Age pottery.
A Hidden Tunnel
After digging around in his back yard, a resident in Egypt’s town of El Haraneya, near the Giza Plateau, uncovered a startling discovery. He discovered a concealed passage inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the largest and oldest of the pyramids.

“This is probably the discovery of the century,” says archaeologist Yukinori Kawae, a National Geographic Explorer. The discovery made headlines since no one expected to see such a hole there.
Underground Bunker
It appears that the California family was not the only one on this list to uncover a bunker, or fallout shelter, in their property. It turns out that this Arizona guy, John Sims, was digging in his backyard only to discover a Cold War-era bomb bunker.

When Sims eventually found the shelter, he was happy to learn that it wasn’t a septic tank. Talk about small favors. Instead, he just had to contend with a giant doomsday area to take shelter in.
Some individuals must travel the world to discover something new and exciting, but others merely need to look around their own backyard. Whether they discovered anything historically significant or simply something that made their jaws drop, these incidents piqued our attention and made us question whether we should go exploring in our own backyards.
