September 11, 1971: Donny Osmond releases #1 hit
In the 1970s, Donny Osmond was one of the most famous singers in the music industry. A teen heartthrob, Osmond charmed millions, along with his talented family, including his sister, Marie Osmond. On September 11, 1971, 13-year-old Donny released his first number-one hit, Go Away Little Girl. This was only the beginning of his record-breaking career.
From child star to teen idol
Donny Osmond started his career in the early 1960s when he was just five years old, beautifully singing You Are My Sunshine on The Andy Williams Show. He joined his brothers, Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay, and became known as the Osmond Brothers—a musical group comparable to the popular Jackson Five group in the ‘60s and ‘70s. The Osmond Brothers produced hit numbers, including One Bad Apple.
However, in 1971, Donny emerged as a solo star. He released many hit singles, including Sweet and Innocent, Go Away Little Girl, and a number of cover tunes of hit songs from Frankie Avalon, Paul Anka, Nat “King” Cole, Johnny Mathis, and Elvis Presley. Osmond became a teen idol, pushing himself into international fame.
‘The Donny & Marie Show’
Donny started his career with his brothers, but he gained international success with his sister, Marie. In 1974, the brother-and-sister duo co-hosted The Mike Douglas Show for a week. They were then offered a show of their own, The Donny & Marie Show. Every week from 1976 to 1979, Donny and Marie entertained audiences with their television variety series. The show featured a wide array of celebrities, including Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz Jr., Betty White, John Wayne, Dick Van Dyke, Sonny & Cher, Tina Turner, Debbie Reynolds, Farrah Fawcett, Billy Crystal, and many more.
A one-of-a-kind performer
Since the 1970s, Donny has entertained audiences on television, musical theater [starring as Joseph in several productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat], radio, and film. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat composer Andrew Lloyd Webber personally selected Donny to star in the film adaptation of the musical, stating, “To me, there is no better selection.”
That’s how everyone feels about Donny Osmond. He is a one-of-a-kind performer who has enlightened audiences with his musical talents for over 50 years. According to the singer, he will continue to perform for as long as possible. Whatever he has planned next, his fans will fully support him.
