A look at celebrity costumes of Halloween past
It’s that time of year again when clothes come off and what remains are colorful rags that barely pass as legal. And who better than celebrities to pull them off (well, not literally)? These are the best celebrity costumes from Halloween past.
Elton John and Bette Midler
On Halloween night in 2005, parties may have taken place on a Monday night, but when you’re a celebrity who cares? That certainly was the case for Bette Midler, who held NYRP’s 10th Anniversary Bette Midler’s Hulaween, and it would appear that she is dressed up like a rose. Nothing too scary about that.
The NYRP’s mission is to restore and maintain public spaces in New York, so the party is held annually. This particular year it was held in the Waldorf Astoria, and as you can see Elton John is classing it up, as the best-dressed devil we’ve ever seen.
Um, there’s only one word that describes Emily Ratajkowski in this photo, and that word is “hot!” Ratajkowski is harnessing her inner Racquel Welch, as she’s dressed up as the iconic actress’s character from the 1966 classic, One Million Years B. C.
This photo was taken in 2018, and she actually went on Jimmy Kimmel Live with the costume. She’s worn many fantastic costumes in the past, such as Cleopatra, but the one that really caught our attention was her Marge Simpson. She hand-painted her body green, and by the end of the night, it was smeared everywhere. She probably still looked amazing though.
You can probably guess who the man is on the left, but who the heck is his twin on the left? That’s Bruce Willis with his assistant, Stephen J. Eads, and the two are arriving at ‘Shyamaween’ on Oct. 28, 2017, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which is a Halloween party hosted by Director M. Night Shyamalan.
Eads is also a co-producer, and the two have collaborated on such films as Pulp Fiction, and Unbreakable. A couple of days after this photograph, Willis began shooting the sequel to Unbreakable, which is called Glass. Why he chose Raggedy Anne we’re not exactly sure, and find it hard to believe that characters like John McClain or Butch Coolidge would like that too much.
When you think of women’s Halloween costumes, the words “sexy” or “naughty” usually precedes what the actual costume is. In the instance of singer Christina Aguilera’s 2005 Halloween costume, a strong case could be made for either, especially since the back of her costume reads, “At Your Service.”
Her handcuffed doctor friend is Jordan Bratman, and the two married at the time of this photo. That’s good because he was using his stethoscope to take Aguilera’s temperature, and he typically placed it on her… ahem… behind. But hey the party was at The Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, and what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
Neil Patrick Harris
Neil Patrick Harris is a big-time fan of Halloween, and every year he seems to outdo himself. We’ve got all the scary ones represented here: His husband David Burtka (right) is Count Dracula, while his daughter Harper Grace is Bride of Frankenstein, his son Gideon Scott is a werewolf, and finally, NPH is the monster from Frankenstein.
This photo was taken back in 2013, and since then Harris, Burtka, and the kids have taken on many different characters. They’ve been the Ridler and the Joker, OB Wan and Han Solo, and even a family of traveling circus freaks. If you ever need costume ideas, just go poke around the two men’s Instagram accounts.
Chrissy Teigen and Kate Upton
Heidi Klum’s Halloween party has been going on for so long, that Kate Upton was seven years old when they started. Fast forward to Halloween 2011, and the 12th-annual party saw a 19-year-old Upton posing with the gorgeous fellow model, 26-year-old Chrissy Teigen.
A Halloween party at the PH-D Rooftop Lounge at Dream Downtown in New York City requires a smart costume for entry. Teigan is definitely showing off her smarts with her pageant princess costume from the TV show Toddlers and Tiaras. Upton gets a few more style points for not only nailing her Marilyn Monroe costume but adding the zombie element makes it Halloween.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
This 2012 gem of a costume by none other than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was from an Instagram post that came with the words, “Don’t make angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.” Then, the message was signed with the name, “The People’s Hulk.”
The Rock has Polynesian roots, and from the looks of it, he’s about to go into full haka mode in a hot second. He is an absolute beast of a man and makes Lou Ferrigno’s version of the Hulk look like Bruce Banner. Of all the costumes we’ve seen thus far, this is the most terrifying.
Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West
When was the last time you saw Kanye West smile? Okay, now ask yourself, when was the last time you saw Kim Kardashian be sexy? If your answers were “never,” and “right now,” respectively, then you win the $18 million prize (Note to reader: There is no $18 million prize)!
While $18 million might be a drop in the bucket for these megastars, their Halloween costumes in 2012 sent ripples through Hollywood. The two are dressed as Cat Woman and Batman, from the film, Batman Returns, as they arrive at the LIV nightclub in Miami Beach, Florida. Because her birthday is on Oct. 21st, Kardashian celebrated her birthday too.
Elvis Presley and Joan Bradshaw
Here’s a question: If Elvis Presley were wearing a crown, and carrying a scepter, would it be a costume? Probably not, as the King chose to show up at this 1957 party held by the clothier Sy Devore masquerade style. That’s a little odd, as everyone else at the party chose a costume.
That’s actress and beauty pageant winner Joan Bradshaw next to Presley, who is said to have gotten a career boost by arriving at the party with him. Before you ask yourself, “where’s Priscilla?” Just remember that this was a full year before he met her, and less than five months before he was drafted into the US Army.
This was one of those costumes that takes a non-sexy idea and then adds that special word to the name of the costume. We’re pretty sure that Rihanna is the “cool but rude” Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but from the looks of her open kimono, she’s added a few sexy twists to highlight her amazing figure.
Rihanna showed up to this 2014 Halloween party with three of her besties too, as they all chose a different turtle to complete the group of four. As for Master Splinter, he wasn’t seen at the party, but perhaps David Spade’s mouse could pass for the leader of the turtles (note to reader: he cannot).
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biell
Since four-year-old Silas was born to megastar parents Justin Timberlake and Jessica Beil, the trio has gone all out on their Halloween costumes. The couple had at least one photographer with them on Halloween 2018, and this image appeared via Instagram with the caption, “Fighting crime in these streets,” as they were trick-or-treating.
This family tradition has seen them take things quite far, as in 2016 they were a family of trolls, while in 2017, Timberlake was Buzz Light Year, Silas, was Woody, and Beil was Jesse from Toy Story 3. This time they’re super hero’s Robin, Batman, and Harley Quinn (respectively) from The Lego Batman Movie.
Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber
Former mega-supermodel Cindy Crawford and her lucky billionaire husband Rande Gerber hit the Halloween scene hard in 2018, as they were seen at multiple parties, and had a different costume for each. The reason for all the shenanigans: Casamigos Tequila.
When you think of Casamigos, you probably think of George Clooney, but it was Gerber who partnered with the Best Actor Award winner, to launch one of the hottest new brands of tequila worldwide. This party in Los Angeles on Oct. 26, 2018, was the first of many, as Gerber harnesses his inner David Bowie with his Lazarus costume, and Cindy Crawford does her best Debby Harry from Blondie.
Heidi Klums (plural)
Supermodel Heidi Klum is somewhat of a Halloween guru, as she can be seen here in costume at the 17th iteration of her annual event. She always has fantastic costumes, and this time, she chose one (or six) that is/are completely unique. Take a look and see if you can spot which one is actually her!
Well, if you’ve seen her in magazines, you probably didn’t have any trouble identifying her. In fact, this is probably her most flattering costume, as previously, she has gone as an ape from Planet of the Apes, a 90-year-old woman, and even Princess Fiona from Shrek.
Jessica Alba and Cash Warren
We searched high and wide for a photo of Jessica Alba smiling on this night in 2015, but this is the happiest we could find the actress. Here we have her arriving at Casamigos Halloween party while holding hands with husband Cash Warren.
Warren is obviously “a naval aviator” named Maverick from Top Gun, while Alba has chosen a slightly more obscure and fun movie character to mimic. For her costume, she chose to be Romy (originally played by Mira Sorvino) from Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, and her RBF is a far cry from the ditzy, happy character in the movie.
Prior to Katy Perry’s 2017 Halloween party/concert in Toronto, she posted the following challenge on Instagram: “BRING UR KATY HALLOWEEN COSTUME ‘A’ GAME TO THE SHOW ON TUESDAY, HALLOWEEN NIGHT & I WILL PICK 10 PEOPLE (and their +1’s) OUT OF THE AUDIENCE (and with a little help from some friends for seats I can’t reach) FOR AN AFTER-SHOW HANG, SELFIES INCLUDED!”
Toronto fans showed up en masse in full Halloween regal, while Perry rocked their socks off. Here we can see she has a third eye, which is a slightly better costume than the dance troop of TV heads in the background.
Singer Mariah Carey is another whose costume falls into the “naughty, “sexy,” or other words that would suggest she’s no girl next door. Her (fill in the blank) devil costume seems to be designed for her figure and given who she is, it’s not too hard to imagine that this is tailored.
Truth be told, she looks absolutely stunning, and that would’ve been what she was aiming for considering she was the host. This photo was taken in 2016, but Carey has been hosting Halloween parties from her home in Hollywood for years. In 2016, visitors included ex-husband Nick Cannon, Master P, and Floyd Mayweather.
Jay Z and Beyonce
And now a reading from Eddie Murphy’s 1988 classic comedy, Coming to America: Prince Akeem: “But when I marry, I want the woman to love me for who I am, not because of what I am.” King Jaffe Joffer: “And who are you?” Prince Akeem: “I am a man who has never tied his own shoes before!” King Jaffe Joffer: “Wrong. You are a Prince who has never tied his shoes. Believe me. I tied my own shoes once. It is an overrated experience.”
The trio of megastars, Jay Z, Beyonce, and yes, even their daughter Blue Ivy Carter, are absolutely nailing their take on Coming to America. Jay Z is dressed up as Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem, while Beyonce is actually Akeem’s mother, Queen Aeoleon.
George Clooney, Cindy Crawford, and Rande Gerber
We thought we’d revisit that magical Halloween a year ago, and show you just how awesome George Clooney, Cindy Crawford, and Rande Gerber look in their costumes. Cindy Crawford’s costume looks like she came straight out of the golden age of air travel, and actually served lucky passengers on the flight.
Of course, Clooney and Glende were dressed as pilots, and a video shows Clooney admitting to passengers that he’s never flown a plane before, but reassures them that a bottle of Casamigos tequila will help him learn. Well, the plane made it to Vegas on Oct. 27th, and the trio had a ball.
Jayne Mansfield and Mickey Hargitay
It’s good to see that the Halloween spirit transcends generations, and actress Jayne Mansfield has embraced such words as “sexy.” That’s not particularly surprising, as a look at a collection of Mansfield photos shows she preferred to show as much skin as possible, within reason.
Mansfield and Hagerty got married in 1958, but thing is, this photo was taken in 1956 while Mansfield was married to another man. But Hagerty was a Mr. Universe (show off), and evidently Mansfield fell for him immediately. But this is where the first sparks flew, on a Halloween night in Los Angeles, barely dressed as caveman and woman.
Emily Ratajkowski recently did a rendition of Cleopatra, and while it was very sexy, it was nowhere near the creativity is shown in Cher’s 1988 costume. Again, it was important for her to look her best, as she was the host of this New York Halloween party.
Evidently the entire premise of the party was to launch her then-new perfume, “Uninhibited.” “Uninhibited” became a very successful product that still sells today. As for Cher, she’s dazzled as she dressed up for Halloween, but what’s interesting is that so many people now dress up as “Cher,” as she was known for wearing elaborate costumes beyond just Halloween.
You really got to hand it to “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” singer Cyndi Lauper, as she has completely embraced the fact that she’s pregnant, and decided to make it a part of her costume. She would give birth less than three weeks later, and at this party, she’s, you guessed it, a Belly Dancer.
Son Declyn was born on Nov. 19th, but that didn’t stop Lauper from partying hard at Howard Kaplan Antiques in New York City. As much fun as the musician had, one can only hope that she abstained from any drinking or smoking, leaving that to the rest of the wicked crowd.
Nikki and Brie Bella
Can you hear it? “Redrum.” Yes, that’s what they’re saying with their collective brain right now, and you should be terrified. These two identical twins are Nikki and Brie Bella, and you might know them as former diva champions in the World Wrestling Entertainment.
The fact that they’re holding hands is as creepy as it is scary (and perhaps morbidly sexy), as they’re dressed as the twin girls from The Shining. The two are retired from wrestling now, and while you can still see them in plenty of movies, TV shows, and Youtube videos, they’re costumes they wore on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in 2018, “de-redrum” it.
David Spade and Heidi Cortez
There may be a bit of a mismatch between these two, but always remember the funny men get the ladies. Comedian David Spade has dated beautiful actresses and models from Heather Locklear to Teri Hatcher, so it was no surprise when he turned up arm in arm with radio personality Heidi Cortez at the 2015 Casamigos Halloween party.
This time, the party that was held in Los Angeles took place at the private residence of Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford. Spade has opted for a pizza eating mouse, while Cortez is a sexy waitress at an old fashioned burger joint, and seems to be suggesting something beyond hamburgers with her “juicy burgers” apron.
Kevin Hart and Eniko Parrish
At the time of this writing, Kevin Hart is undergoing a rough time trying to recover from injuries sustained when a car he was riding in was hit by a reckless driver. But while Hart is having a rough time, perhaps he can find solace in the fact that at least once upon a time, he looked “fly!”
This Instagram post appeared in 2012 and featured Hart with then-girlfriend Eniko Parrish (the two would marry in 2016). Their “soul power” is for real, as the two look like they’re headed for a regular party at Studio 54 in New York City rather than a Halloween party.
The cast of Blackish
If you listen closely, you can almost hear them saying “Wakanda Forever!” That’s just what actors Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Marcus Scribner said as they were approached by their kids in the show Blackish, as a salute to the movie that inspired their costumes: Black Panther.
Anderson, as head of the household, has chosen to dress up as the main character in Black Panther, T’Challa, while Ross is sporting her ring blades as Nakia. Previously, the family had dressed up as superheroes, but for Halloween 2018, Anderson said they dressed up as “actual heroes,” in reference to the groundbreaking film for which they honored.
Russell Wilson and Ciara
Okay, so no offense to the cast of Blackish, but Ciara is definitely nailing her version of Nakia. Ross chose a more conservative look for TV, but in real life, Ciara never misses a chance to sizzle, and needless to say, she looks hot!
We’re used to seeing her husband Russell Wilson behind a mask, but usually, he’s under center and wearing No. 3 for the Seattle Seahawks football team. His version is also better than the one portrayed on Blackish, and same for Ciara’s child Future Zahir Wilburn (from a previous marriage), and the pair’s child, Sienna Princess Wilson (lower right).
Speaking of someone who never misses a chance to sizzle, we’ve arrived at Paris Hilton, as she arrives at a Halloween party in Los Angeles in a bloody Rolls Royce. Quite fitting for the sexy bunny, who hops around the world dropping on the best parties in the galaxy (as far as we know).
This photo was taken in 2017, as she arrived at the seventh annual treats! magazine Halloween party. Hilton is another big fan of Halloween, and though we’ve seen a number of costumes from her in the past, they always seem to have the same lack of clothing. Previously, she was a peacock and even a showgirl in 2018.
Jamie Lee Curtis
This one is a bit of a throwback, as we see Jamie Lee Curtis, at the height of career, arriving at a Halloween party in 2000. In this case, she’s chosen a costume from a show that would’ve been extremely popular at the time, but now has more of a cult following The show was: Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.
Curtis was actually hosting an event that was held to benefit the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation. For the Seventh Annual Dream Halloween party, Curtis was morphed as the Pink Power Ranger, also known as… the Pink Power Ranger. C’mon, was that the best they could do?
Hugh Hefner and Playboy Playmates
Well, go ahead and count how many Playboy Playmates there are in the photograph, and we’ll go ahead and show you the luckiest guy in the world. That’s Mr. Hugh Hefner, dressed up as a devilish version of himself (is there any other version?), and nine, yes, nine Playboy Playmates to his left and right.
There are those words again, “sexy” and “naughty,” rearing their beautiful heads when we try to name all the costumes we see here. Hefner was going through a phase of dating multiple women at a time when this 2001 photo taken outside of the Las Palmas night club in Hollywood.
