A decades-old photo album confirms suspicions about her daughter’s fiance
Shortly after young couple Heidi Parker and Ed Savitt met in college, things began to move quickly. After a few months of dating, the two met each other’s families, moved in together, and began to seriously plan for the future. Little did they know that Heidi Parker’s mother was about to find a startling surprise in an old photo album.
Ready for college
As she prepared to graduate from high school, Heidi already had a specific college in mind. Newcastle University was 130 miles from her hometown — not worlds away, but a good distance for someone like her, who had a great relationship with her family and had remained close to them her whole life.
The famed research university in England seemed perfect for Heidi — a place where she could receive a world-class education among some of the best and brightest minds the world had to offer. But even she couldn’t predict how fortuitous her decision would be, and how shocking a later discovery would prove to be…
Life on and off-campus
Like many new students, Heidi wanted to immerse herself completely in the college life. While she decided not to live in the dorms, she wanted to stay as close as possible to the school, living with other students in the same boat.
Living in an off-campus student-living apartment seemed like a perfect solution. Her roommates and she were overjoyed and excited about the prospect of living in their new apartment. Shortly after they moved in, however, things began to prove less than ideal. Unsatisfied with her current living situation, Heidi began searching for an alternative. This choice would affect her life more than she could possibly imagine.
After weeks of searching, Heidi found what she thought would be the perfect place — a studio apartment she could have all to herself just walking distance from Newcastle University. She leaped at the opportunity, secured the new apartment, and began packing her bags. When the lease was up, she handed the keys to the new tenants and didn’t look back.
She never thought she’d return to the place she’d called home for a few months when she started college, but as fate would have it, she’d be setting foot in that familiar house again very soon under very unexpected circumstances.
A Facebook message from a handsome stranger
One day while relaxing at her new apartment, Heidi got an unexpected message. The message was from the new tenant staying in her old apartment. He was at his wit’s end — after trying for hours and becoming increasingly frustrated, he couldn’t get the laundry machine to work.
After seeing her name on a post, he realized she had occupied the place he was currently residing in and decided she probably knew how to work the confusing apparatus. Heidi briefly tried to describe the idiosyncrasies of the washing machine through text, but it was difficult to explain so she suggested she show him in person. She would later admit she had a bit of an ulterior motive for this suggestion…
Ed Savitt and the washing machine
Heidi later confessed that her primary reason for returning to her old flat to help the new tenant was “basically because he was hot.” Fortune favors the bold. Heidi drove to Ed’s apartment and showed him how to use the washing machine. She was happy to meet the man on the other side of the screen and was pleased to see he looked just as good in person.
Ed was a little embarrassed about having needed help figuring out a washing machine, but he was happy to have swallowed his pride and reached out to Heidi. As their brief encounter neared its end, Ed worked up the courage to ask Heidi something…
Their first date
When she was about to leave, Ed asked if Heidi would like to go on a date with him. His relief was visible on his face when she agreed. Heidi, for her part, was pleasantly surprised — the visit to her old apartment had gone even better than expected.
The pair decided to go to a nearby cafe for a cup of coffee. “All I can remember thinking is ‘wow, he is hot,’” Heidi said about their first meeting at the apartment. But over coffee, they were able to establish a meaningful connection through conversation. The pair began to really hit it off.
The kindling of a romance
Needless to say, their first date was a huge success. To the couple’s delight, they both agreed to see each other again — and again. As Heidi and Ed spent more and more time together, their bond would only grow stronger. They found out they had a lot in common. For one, they were both attending the same school and had big plans for the future.
The more they learned about each other, the more smitten they became. Throughout college, the pair seldom left each other’s sides. With all the time they’d been spending together, you’d think they’d know everything there was to know about each other… But you’d be mistaken…
Plans for the future
As Heidi and Ed’s graduations drew near, they knew they would continue their relationship well past college. Not wanting to rush things too much, they both moved to London, but separately. Both lovebirds focused on their careers — Heidi landed a job at a fast-paced PR firm, while Ed chased his dream of owning a coffee shop.
After a short while, they decided to take the next big step and move in together. But first, they wanted to meet each other’s families. Both were excited by the prospect, but neither would know the stunning discovery that would arise as a result.
Things went well at first
By this point, Heidi and Ed were so invested in each other hardly anything made them nervous. Still, they must have been a bit anxious about the day their families would finally meet each other. The pair would introduce their mothers to each other at a restaurant and spend a nice evening together.
While the idea was exciting to them, it seemed fairly ordinary. Right away, things started off on the right foot. Heidi’s mother, Kay, and Ed’s mom, Fiona got along famously, trading stories and laughing together. One story in particular, however, would prove to be anything but ordinary.
As the evening went on, both mothers began to notice something strange about each other — how many things they had in common. In fact, both families shared a surprising amount of similar interests and hobbies. Both enjoyed sailing and traveling, and had even gone to several of the same vacation destinations around the Mediterranean around the same time.
They laughed about it — it was a strange coincidence after all. More than that, Heidi’s mom started to get a strange feeling — but this feeling was quickly shoved to the back of her mind when the young couple made a shocking announcement, one that would render both mothers speechless.
Even as their mothers were getting along so well, Heidi and Ed were getting increasingly nervous. It turns out the couple had good reason to be anxious about their mothers’ meeting. Heidi and Ed were preparing to make an important announcement — one that would change their lives forever: They were getting married.
Kay and Fiona were stunned. But quickly, their shock turned to excitement and happiness. Their children had found love and were willing to dedicate the rest of their lives to each other. Everyone at the table was overjoyed by the news. But this shocking news would pale in comparison to the revelation that was coming next…
The evening wraps up
After they announced the news, the young couple explained their plans — they wanted to tie the knot by the end of the year. Everyone at the table was swept up in the excitement as the pair relayed the details of their engagement.
As the evening drew to a close, Kay couldn’t help but shake the odd feeling she had before. There was something about her daughter’s future husband she just couldn’t get out of her head. She resolved to do some investigating when she got home. Still, it would be weeks before she’d make the startling discovery that would leave both families stunned.
Anyone that’s ever helped plan a wedding will tell you how much work is involved. Heidi’s mom, Kay, was heavily involved in the process. With all the bustle going on around her, Kay felt she had to do some cleaning to make room for all the wedding supplies that were being stored at her house.
Even with all the distractions around her, Kay kept returning to the feeling she’d had at the dinner. She kept her thoughts to herself, but secretly she hoped she’d find something that would confirm or deny her mounting suspicions about her daughter’s fiance. Indeed, she’d get exactly what she’d hoped for.
Something in the attic
With the wedding approaching, Kay found it easy to distract herself with all the preparations that had to be made. Even so, the thought kept creeping into her mind. One day, while doing some spring cleaning in the attic, she came across an old photo album.
Naturally, she started flipping through the pages and basking in the nostalgia. It wasn’t long before she came upon pictures of their family trip to Turkey. She was instantly brought back in time to one of her favorite memories — a story that she had delighted in telling at the dinner table several weeks ago.
Heidi’s first boyfriend
Heidi was just six years old when they took a family vacation around the Meditteranean sea. They hit many tourist spots before they ended up spending several weeks on the southern coast of Turkey. Here, Heidi had formed a strong connection with a young boy.
The two were practically inseparable for the duration of their time in Turkey. In fact, they had held hands almost the entire time. As Kay was telling the story to Fiona and her son over dinner, she noticed her daughter turning red. Not wanting to embarrass her daughter too much, she dropped the subject. But thumbing through this photo album, the story was once again thrust into the forefront of her mind. When she looked at a picture of the young boy’s face, her jaw instantly dropped.
The little blond boy
The smiling boy in the picture was exactly how she remembered him — the shaggy blond bowl cut, his shy smile — and the fact that he was standing right next to her daughter, the way he had for practically the entire vacation.
She was utterly floored. It couldn’t be! She studied the shape of his face, his eyes, his jawline — everything seemed to match perfectly. She couldn’t help but feel her suspicions were confirmed completely. But she had to be sure before she shared it with her daughter, and she knew precisely the way to find out. It was time to make a phone call.
Confirming her suspicions
Kay knew her daughter would be little help in this situation. Heidi was only six at the time she had met this young boy so her memory would be foggy at best. Worse, she’d have no way of knowing for sure, since she hadn’t watched the young boy grow up.
As she pondered how best to proceed, more memories started flooding in. She remembered that the young blond boy had been named Ed. Was this just a coincidence, or was this the same Ed her daughter was about to marry? She was beginning to have doubts. These had to be impossible odds. There was only one way to find out.
Going to the source
Kay picked up the phone. She was determined to get to the bottom of this — she was going to settle this once and for all. Kay snapped a picture of the old photograph and sent it in a text to her new friend Fiona. She waited eagerly for a reply.
Kay wouldn’t have to wait long. Almost immediately her phone began ringing — it was Fiona. Both mothers were barely able to contain their excitement. Fiona confirmed everything. The Ed in the picture was indeed Heidi’s fiance. Was it fate, or just a remarkable coincidence?
Fiona was just as shocked as Kay. “When Kay sent me the photo of a little boy called Ed I shrieked, ‘oh my goodness, that’s Ed!’ It was unbelievable,” Fiona said. Both mothers could hardly contain themselves. It seemed impossible, and yet it had happened.
“I was screaming, it was just unreal,” Kay would later say. “Of course, I sent it to Fiona.” As they each remembered the vacation, more and more details started falling into place. Now there was only one thing left to do — they had to tell Ed and Heidi right away. How would they react to the news?
Breaking the news to Heidi and Ed
As soon as she got off the phone with Fiona, Kay texted her daughter the photo right away and called her seconds later. As Kay broke the news, Heidi was understandably stunned. “When my mum found the first photo of us she sent it to me and I was stunned. I actually had to lie down!”
As you might expect, Ed was equally floored by the coincidence. Both Heidi and Ed had no recollection of their vacations in Turkey, or that they had sparked a romance with someone at only six years old, but there was no disputing the evidence that was staring them in the face.
The more Kay and Fiona looked at pictures from their vacation, the more evidence they were able to uncover. Fiona found pictures of six-year-old Heidi in her old photos as well. “Loads more photographs came out,” Fiona told the Daily Mail. “None of us had any idea whatsoever that Heidi and Ed had met before university.”
Five more photos of the pair on vacation were found. Naturally, they spread the photos around to all their family and friends. No one could believe the news — least of all Heidi and Ed. Heidi credits the startling coincidence with changing her whole outlook on life.
It had to be fate
It was impossible for Heidi to reconcile her beliefs with what had happened. “I didn’t believe in fate before finding that out, but there’s no arguing with it – we are clearly destined to be together,” Heidi told the Daily Mail. Indeed, it’s difficult to explain — what are the chances?
Kay suspected that Heidi and Ed had a “subconscious realization that they had shared that time together when they met as adults.” That would certainly explain their seemingly instantaneous connection. This fairytale story was too good not to incorporate into their wedding, and they knew just the way to do it.
Heidi and Ed’s wedding night
The wedding guests all received a special surprise in their mailboxes — the wedding invitations for Heidi and Ed’s big day were pictures of the young couple at six years old on vacation in Turkey. It was just too perfect not to share with the world.
Their wedding celebration in Derbyshire was full of joy from everyone in attendance who got to be part of this fairy-tale love story. Lots of people believe in love at first sight, but no one could argue that Heidi and Ed hadn’t experienced this for themselves.
The families felt connected as well
Of course, that fateful vacation in 1997 didn’t just link Heidi and Ed, but their families as well. In fact, all of Heidi and Ed’s siblings had played together a lot during their time in Turkey — and they had the photos to prove it.
Since everyone had formed such a strong bond two decades ago, the two families had no difficulty becoming one. They’ve even planned several more vacations together. It didn’t take long for the media to sniff out the story — and soon Heidi and Ed started to see their names in headlines everywhere. Who doesn’t enjoy a good love story?
The shock hasn’t worn off and neither has their love
It’s now been two years since Ed and Heidi tied the knot, but they’d been together four years before their wedding. Even so, the young couple find the story incredible. It’s crazy to think we could have gotten married, shared our lives together, but never found out about this,” Heidi said.
Indeed the story sounds almost too bizarre to be true. “People keep telling us it must be fate, and that it’s like the plot of a movie,” Heidi continued. What do you think? Is it fate or destiny, or just one of the world’s most unlikely coincidences?
