What’s as strong as a lion and as smart as a human? A lion-human! Egyptian authorities have discovered a stunning new statue while excavating in the Valley of the Rams in Egypt. It has the body of a lion and the head of a human.
Oh, look! A sphinx!
This wasn’t your standard Egyptian archaeological dig. Construction workers for the Al-Kabbash road project stumbled upon it while excavating for the new road. It wasn’t all chance. It was discovered between the temples of Karnak and Luxor.
Karnak and Luxor are treasure troves of ancient Egyptian history. They date back to the second millennium BC and are located within the boundaries of the ancient city of Thebes. The outdoor complexes are among the world’s largest. What better place to find an undisturbed sphinx?
A symbol of the gods
Researchers are trying to figure out which pharaohs the miniature sphinx statue represents. The image of a lion body with a human head represents the relationship with Sekhmet, the sun goddess.
Statues of the goddess were typically built to guard the tombs of dead pharaohs. The most famous sphinx is the colossal one found near the Great Pyramid.
Where will the sphinx call home?
This sphinx is one of the most important Egyptian archaeological discoveries since 2014. The Egyptian government plans to put the statue on display after a delicate excavation. Which museum it’s heading to remains a mystery. Authorities are being stingy with the details.
They haven’t even released any photos or video. You can see it in person if you don’t mind taking a short trip to the Valley of the Rams. The statue still sits where it was found. Who wouldn’t want to see a lion with a human head? The world can never get enough.
